The unseemly shouting match was on the brink of getting out of control when a security guard broke up the rumpus.

Nicola Sturgeon, Tricia Marwick and Shona Robinson surrounded Smith as she left after a heated exchange late on Thursday.

Witnesses said the three screamed and jabbed their fingers at Smith, trying to intimidate her.

One said: "It was like a scene from a playground. Every time Margaret tried to put forward her point of view, Nicola would point her finger in her face and shout 'don't dare talk over me'.

"It was very intimidating. They were like a gang of schoolkids."

Last night, the SNP MSPs denied they intimidated Smith.

Robinson said: "I have never intimidated anyone in my life."

One Liberal Democrat source said: "It is all about the Anniesland by-election. They know we are about to address the issue and don't want us to get the credit."

Both Sturgeon and Robison sit on the Health Committee.

One committee member said: "Nicola Sturgeoon and Shona Robison have only been on the committee for a couple of weeks and already they are causing trouble."

The furious SNP MSPs later turned on Tory health committee member Mary Scanlon.

She said: "They came into my office and behaved in a similar way. Their behaviour was certainly aggressive."
