CATCHING ON.

Byline: MATTHEW KREDELL Staff Writer

Kevin Ciccone spends most of his time on a soccer field, where he doesn't look at all like a football player.

He especially doesn't look like a receiver, since he can't use his hands. But Ciccone has become Hart of Newhall's top receiver despite lacking remarkable size or speed.

``I've been playing soccer for 14 years,'' said Ciccone, son of Hart soccer coach Robert Ciccone. ``But I'm seeing myself progress more and more as a football player.''

Ciccone had his best game Friday in a 27-14 victory over Birmingham of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999). . He caught nine passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including one on fourth down that put the game away in the final minute. On the season, he has 21 catches for 359 yards and four scores.

``He's a smart kid who knows how to get open and knows our offense,'' coach Mike Herrington said. ``He has good athletic ability, good speed and great hands.''

The junior's best asset might be his chemistry with quarterback Sean Norton. The two are best friends and have played together since they were freshmen.

``I can always trust him,'' Ciccone said. ``If we have a play set up for me, I know he will get it there and he knows I'll come down with it.''

Top receiver names favorites

Steve Smith, who had been keeping about half of the top 25 college football teams atop his wish list, has narrowed it to three favorites.

The two-time Daily News Player of the Year as a wide receiver/defensive back for Taft of Woodland Hills said he is focusing his attention on Tennessee, Texas and USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

Smith took an official trip to Texas last weekend, attending the No. 3 Longhorns' game against Oklahoma State.

``I liked Texas a lot,'' Smith said. ``They'll probably be there right up to the end.''

Smith said he is beginning plans to take a trip to Tennessee. He already has taken multiple unofficial visits to nearby USC. Smith played briefly with Tennessee QB Casey Clausen Casey Clausen (born January 9, 1981) is a former American football player who played college football for the University of Tennessee. He took over the starting position from A.J. Suggs.  before entering Taft.

Smith practiced with Alemany of Mission Hills, where Clausen was starting quarterback, in the summer before ninth grade. Smith decided to attend Taft after Alemany made a coaching change. Brandon Hance, who will be eligible to play for USC next season after transferring from Purdue, was Smith's quarterback at Taft.

Back in the groove

But an effective running game, powered by Merrill Mullaly, some clutch passes by quarterback Erik Vose and a fierce pass rush held off the Chargers 28-23 and restored Westlake's place as a contender for the league title.

``We needed this victory so bad because not only did we lose, we were really not in the games the last two weeks,'' Benkert said. ``We tasted defeat and it didn't taste well. We couldn't get behind in the league.''

Family business

Eddie Garcia kept the Moorpark quarterback position in the family, moving from safety to take over for his cousin, Aaron Garcia Aaron Garcia is a quarterback in the Arena Football League. High school career

Garcia never had played quarterback full time and hadn't played at all since he was a sophomore. Concern over his rust quickly disappeared. Garcia isn't expected to throw a lot. He needs to be accurate and give the Musketeers a balanced attack.

Moorpark is 4-0 after Garcia completed 11 of 14 passes for 142 yards against Newbury Park last week. For the year, he has passed for 457 yards and six touchdowns.

``I think getting used to the whole thing took a little while,'' said senior Dennis Pitta pitta (pĭt`ə), name used to refer to a genus (Pitta) of small, plump, brightly colored birds.
