``Last year, over 4,000 cats were euthanized at the Camarillo Animal Shelter and that number reflects only one small county," said Diane Bentz, veterinary technician at Valley Veterinary Clinic in Simi Valley, which is participating in the program. ``By offering this low-cost (service), we're hoping to make a dent in cat overpopulation.''

 who founded the clinic more than 30 years ago, Lowell Novy, and Allison Klee, who recently joined the staff, will be part of the medical team expected to complete as many as 100 surgeries Sunday.

Pet owners can drop off their cats in the morning and pick them up in the late afternoon. The cats should fully recover within a day or two.

In addition to offering the spay and neuter service, Novy and his staff have joined with Big Al's Pet Store in Simi Valley to aid in cat adoptions.

``Most cats make delightful pets, and there are so many in Ventura County that need a good home,'' said Novy.

The Valley Veterinary Clinic began offering low-cost spay-neuter programs four years ago. Three were held last year, and Novy plans to increase the number this year.

``We assist other veterinarians Veterinarians and veterinary surgeons (vets) are medical professionals who operate exclusively on animals. Well-known and notable veterinarians include:
