CASTRO HONORED BY SERVICES CENTER COMPLEX SET NEXT TO POLICE STATION.

Byline: Angie Valencia-Martinez Staff Writer

MOORPARK - Recognizing his years as a crusader for the poor, city leaders will name a new human services center after Ruben Castro, whose public service spans more than half a century.

Castro, 76, has helped supply food, clothing and financial assistance for the less fortunate through his work at the Moorpark Food Pantry and Catholic Charities.

``Throughout his life, Ruben has worked tirelessly tire·less

to bring fundamental services to anyone in need,'' said Mayor Pat Hunter. ``During his recent retirement celebration, Ruben was overheard to have said how much he was looking forward to the day when those services could be consolidated and provided in one convenient location.

``The facility of which Ruben spoke is an idea long in the planning.''

The human services complex will feature a 10,000-square-foot medical facility for access to low-cost medical, dental and mental health services health services Managed care The benefits covered under a health contract . The center will be on a two-acre site next to the Police Services Center under construction on Spring Road. It is scheduled to be completed in 2007.

Castro called the honor ``very humbling.''

``I'm helping where I'm needed,'' he said. ``We received so much from Moorpark. It's nice to return something back.''

The city, which incorporated in 1983, has named public spaces after community members on only four other occasions: James Weak Avenue, Leta Yancy Street, Miller Parkway and Miller Park, and the Braun Expansion to the Moorpark Active Adult Center.

The latest decision to name the human services center after Castro, a long-ago graduate of Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1] , wasn't hard.

``He's one of a kind in Moorpark,'' said Councilman Clint Harper. ``Nobody comes close to putting the time and effort he does to helping low-income families in our community.''
