Three of a dozen teams participating in the 17th annual Sand Castle Competition, organized by the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Purely by coincidence.

Other architectural and design firms, one lone engineer from Singapore and a group of Cub Scouts participating in the competition built more traditional sand castles. The competitors used shovels to heap piles of sand, carried buckets to and from the ocean to water the piles, compacted the sand, then sculpted sculpt

``All these people working together just to have a good time at the beach, showing their skills,'' he said.

Other designs included a hippopotamus hippopotamus, herbivorous, river-living mammal of tropical Africa. ``Godzilla originally came from Japan,'' architect Yasu Sakurai said proudly. His wife, Kazue, drew the design on which the group based its sandy reptile. The organization's entry was named the winner in the medium group category.

Glendale-based Osborn Architects combined two major movies, building a Godzilla attacking the doomed ship Titanic.

``We're dispelling the myth it was an iceberg'' that sunk the famous ocean liner, said architect Michael Pinto.

The Jerde Partnership of Venice unleashed their Godzilla on a much newer target: the Getty Museum.

``He doesn't need reservations to get in,'' said Walter Thompson Walter Thompson refers to:

Singapore engineer Alvin Lee learned of the competition when he arrived in Southern California and headed to the beach. Lee designed a sand-castle-building kit called Beachworks that is sold in toy stores. The kit contains a variety of plastic molds that help make battlements battlements nplalmenas fpl

, who came from his nearby home to view the contest. ``What a handy little kit,'' he said of Beachworks.

The Cub Scouts from Windsor Hills fashioned a structure with domes meant to be reminiscent of West African mosques. The idea was to teach the young African-American children a bit of their heritage while they had fun, said parent Jay Washington, an architect.

``It's like you're actually designing a city,'' said his 9-year-old son, Andrew.

The competition entry fees of $14 to $16 a person, combined with private donations, raised $7,000 that will go toward scholarships for architecture students in Southern California.
