ARCADIA - Castledale probably isn't the most talented horse to win the Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000.  in its 67 runnings.

But did Castledale, who gave jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. his first Santa Anita Derby win in two tries, deserve such disrespect at the windows? Consider that he had won a Grade III stake at Hollywood Park in November and that this was one of the most wide-open Derbies in recent memory.

Jeff Mullins, who saddled his second consecutive Santa Anita Derby winner after last year's score with Buddy Gil, said he was not concerned the stewards might disqualify To deprive of eligibility or render unfit; to disable or incapacitate.

To be disqualified is to be stripped of legal capacity. A wife would be disqualified as a juror in her husband's trial for murder due to the nature of their relationship.
Castledale after jockey Victor Espinoza had to pull up the late-charging Imperialism along the rail.

``Jose told me he dropped his whip at the eighth pole,'' Mullins said. ``I knew he wasn't going to come down. He had total control of the horse.''

Valdivia didn't gain the mount on Castledale until Wednesday, the morning of the draw. Mullins was waiting to see if Northern California- based jockey Russell Baze could ride, but Baze's daughter was married Saturday night and he couldn't make the trip south.

Castledale, a private purchase by Lyons and Greg Knee in September 2003, had run only once on the dirt in nine lifetime starts before Saturday - a lackluster sixth-place effort in the Grade II San Rafael Stakes The San Rafael Stakes is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park, located in Arcadia, California. The race is a Grade II event with a purse of $150,000 and is open to three-year-olds willing to race one mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt.  on March 6.

Still, Mullins believed the colt deserved another shot. If it didn't pan out, they could always put the horse back on the turf.

``The last time, he'd had a long time off (three-plus months) and he moved a little too soon in that race,'' Mullins said. ``He just came up empty.

``He works better on the dirt than he does the turf, and we knew he could get the distance.''

``The Kentucky Derby is such a difficult race to win,'' Lyons said. ``But just to get there, gee. We'll see. Let's just be thankful for this moment.''

As expected, Lucky Pulpit and Quintons Gold Rush set moderate fractions of :22-4/5 and :46-4/5 for the 1 1/8 mile race over a fast main track that was playing a little dull. The winning time matched Buddy Gil's clocking of 1:49-1/5 last year.
