Cruises on Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi² will be offered monthly starting Saturday. Volunteers and lifeguards will take about a dozen people aboard a pontoon pontoon, one of a number of floats used chiefly to support a bridge, to raise a sunken ship, or to float a hydroplane or a floating dock. Pontoons have been built of wood, of hides stretched over wicker frames, of copper or tin sheet metal sheathed over wooden boat for free two-hour educational cruises around the upper lake to view the plant life and animals and to learn about the fish that thrive in Castaic's waters. ``I'll take them to the coves to see what the lake is really like,'' said tour leader Jason Partee. ``We'll visit some birds' nests - there's a hawk's nest - and we'll talk a little about the ecology, the lake history. I'll them about the water system.'' Partee suggests bringing binoculars and a snack - or even lunch - for when the boat anchors for a break. Lake officials advise calling the recreation area at 257-4050 for reservations, then showing up at the upper-lake dock just before 10 a.m. The boat holds about a dozen people. Frank Gonzalez, lake superintendent, said tour groups will see the wildlife that has moved in to the man-made lake habitat.
