CASTAIC -- In the coming weeks, the surface of Castaic Lake will drop some 60 feet, a prelude to a massive maintenance effort for the reservoir that hosts boaters year-round, fuels a hydro-power operation and holds water headed toward much of thirsty Southern California.

Water supply will not be affected and fishing and boating still will be allowed on the man-made lake -- with the warning to watch out for any large rocks or other underwater hazards.

State Water Project deliveries from Northern California will be halted to bring the level low enough to repair an eroding dam, clean debris from a giant screening system and check pipelines, said John Bunce n. 1. a sudden unexpected piece of good fortune.

The ``draw-down,'' planned for the cooler months, is expected to be completed Nov. 20, with work starting a week later. The project is scheduled to take about four weeks, through January, said Kathy Mathis, an engineer with the DWR DWR Design Within Reach

It will take about four months for the lake's water level to return to normal, officials said.

Much of the work is being done by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, serving 3.9 million residents in 2006. A structure that traps debris and trash also will be cleaned, silt will be removed from the power plant's cooling water systems and the forebay will be dredged.

At the same time, the state water agency will conduct its 10-year inspection of pipelines.

The lower lake, open in the summer for swimming and year-round for boating, will not be affected.

The lake typically holds up to 315,000 acre-feet of water; an acre-foot covers one acre, a foot deep. It will be drawn down to about half capacity.

The 2,235-acre lake, built where a pig farm and ranches used to stand, opened in 1972.
