CASTAIC - Moving a step closer to adding another school to the crowded district, the Castaic school board signed a letter of intent to purchase a parcel of land in Hasley Canyon.

The decision to move forward on the 11.5-acre parcel, which officials have valued at $3.7 million, comes after many meetings to choose a new campus site.

Its popularity is attributed to the character Wendy Darling from the children's play and novel Peter Pan, by J.M. Barrie. The character Wendy was inspired by a real girl.  Gingrich Ging·rich   , Newton Leroy Known as "Newt." Born 1943.

. ``About 50 percent of our students are in temporary classrooms as it is.''

Current enrollment at the three-school district is 2,790, Gingrich said.

Officials hope the new school could open by 2003.

The board approved the letter Thursday. The district now must wait for state approval and a series of environmental tests Environmental tests are used to verify a piece of equipment can withstand the rigors of harsh environments, for example:

  • large, swift variations in temperature

 on the property.

The district was interested in another property in Sloan Canyon Sloan Canyon is a National Conservation Area (NCA) administered by the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It is located just south of Las Vegas, Nevada, a short distance from the Las Vegas Strip, near the Anthem development in Henderson. , but the developer decided last year not to put a campus in that development area.

The district formed a community committee earlier this year to review four possible sites - including the Hasley Canyon location.

A decision to go with the current property, owned and developed by Greystone Homes, was a result of numerous site committee meetings.

The site was deemed to be the best location and price, Gingrich said.

School officials could not estimate the cost of building a new campus, which depends in part on test results from the state, the board president said.

Gingrich added that the district would have to get in line for state funds for the project.
