CASTAIC AGENCY GETS OK TO FILE BRIEF IN RANCH CASE.

A Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday that the Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  Water Agency - the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Valley's largest water provider - can submit a court brief in the brewing legal battle over the massive Newhall Ranch project.

The agency asked last month to file a ``friend of the court'' brief that would support Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County in the Newhall Ranch lawsuit, which is being decided in Kern County Superior Court.

The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state. , developer of the 21,615-home Newhall Ranch project, are defending the development against a challenge by Ventura County, environmentalists and others.

Judge Roger D. Randall also ruled that the plaintiffs in the Newhall Ranch suit, including Ventura County, will have to pay about $19,000 for the copying cost of the lawsuit's administrative record. Other costs, including consulting fees, will be considered and assessed later.

Newhall Land had asked for the immediate payment of $143,573.52 to cover preparation costs for the administrative record.

The trial was moved to Kern County after Newhall Land requested a change of venue A change of venue is the legal term for moving a trial to a new location. In high-profile matters, a change of venue may occur to move a jury trial away from a location where a fair and impartial jury may not be possible due to widespread publicity about a crime and/or defendant(s) .
