CASSEL LEAVES ECR REELING : CHATSWORTH 17, ECR 3.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

All Chatsworth needed was a day off. All Matt Cassel Matt Cassel [CASS-ul] (born May 17, 1982 in Northridge, California) is an American football quarterback for the New England Patriots of the NFL. Cassel homered twice and drove in seven runs to lead the visiting Chancellors (21-3, 14-1) to a 17-3 West Valley League victory Tuesday that was stopped after six innings INNINGS, estates. Although there are two games remaining, a No. 1 seed for the City playoffs that begin June 1 awaits.

That is, unless some other coach dares make a pitch for his team to be No. 1. And it won't be ECR's Bob Ganssle.

``They've got bats that don't quit,'' Ganssle said after Chatsworth hammered ham·mered

Cassel has been mostly quiet this season, the result of his trying too hard to go to left field. So in batting Batting has several meanings:

He also walked and scored in the fifth and singled in two in the sixth.

``We want to send a message,'' Cassel said. ``We're going to compete out here. This year, we want to come out blazing.''

Blazing wasn't the way Chatsworth played last week against Birmingham. Although the Chancellors swept the two-game series, coach Tom Meusborn wasn't pleased with the intensity.

So he gave the team Friday off.

``That's never happened,'' senior Mike Kunes said. ``We took Friday off and on Monday, we took a lot of (batting practice). Worked on going to right field.''

Cassel went there, and so did Jeff Spector and Scott Sellz with their two-run home runs. Kunes went 3 for 5 with a double and improved to 9-1 with a 10-strikeout, one-walk seven-hitter.

ECR struck when it trailed 10-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kenton Morris doubled, Jessie Dechter - playing in just his second game since being hit in the head by a pitch - tripled in Morris, and Brian Somoza homered.

``Kunes is a great pitcher,'' Ganssle said. ``We started to hit him, but we hit him too late.''
