to be a customer and minutes later robbed two cashiers, escaping with $255, police said.

By the afternoon, police had no leads, but, using descriptions from witnesses, they created a composite image of the suspect to distribute to patrol officers, said sheriff's Detective Susan Vaziri.

The man entered Michaels Arts & Crafts in the Valencia Marketplace just after the store opened at 9 a.m. and took a gift bag off the shelf.

``He came up to the counter as if he was a customer getting ready to pay for something, and he told (the cashier CASHIER. An officer of a moneyed institution, who is entitled by virtue of his office to take care of the cash or money of such institution.

He then went to a second cashier. ``He took the money out of the register himself. The girls just backed away,'' said Arlene, a store manager who would not give her last name.

Vaziri said descriptions indicate the gun might have been a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol.

Nobody in the store saw the gunman leave in a car, but police suspect he might have.

``I think there was a car waiting on the other side of the building,'' Vaziri said, adding that police have not connected the robber to any other crimes.
