Byline: Lee Condon Daily News Staff Writer

The Glendale Symphony Orchestra will face the music tonight, when its representatives go before the Glendale City Council to ask for a $25,000 emergency bailout bailout

Paul Kinney, president of the Board of Directors of the Glendale Symphony Orchestra Association, said a 15 percent drop in revenues this year is causing major cash flow problems for the 72-year-old symphony.

"We're in a severe financial bind," Kinney said. "The goal is to get enough breathing space so we can get ourselves through this."

If the council does not come through with the money, association officials may have to cancel the March 17 performance of conductor George Pehlivanian George Pehlivanian was born in Beirut, Lebanon, of Armenian origin. Kinney said the association is not sure it will have enough money to pay the musicians for the concert.

Councilman Larry Zarian Larry Zarian (b.1937) was the first Armenian-American to serve on the city council in the City of Glendale, California. He also served as Glendale Mayor. He currently serves on the California Transportation Commission.  said he has already decided to vote to give the symphony an advance on next year's appropriation. The city already donated $25,000 to the symphony this fiscal year.

"The Glendale Symphony, much like all of the arts all over the country, is suffering," Zarian said. "I think it would be much more tragic if we allowed the symphony not to perform."

Kinney said the local symphony has been struggling for years. , Kinney said the shortfall is "potentially fatal" to the symphony.

The symphony association has been trying to reach out to new segments of the Glendale population in recent years, and the concert featuring Pehlivanian, who is Armenian-American, was considered a major step in getting Armenian residents to come to the Alex, Kinney said.

The council will take up the issue tonight but is not expected to render its decision until next week.

Councilman Sheldon Baker said he will need more information from symphony officials before he can vote to provide an additional $25,000.

"I want to know what their plans are for the future, about what they can do to pull themselves out of this," Baker said.
