The Los Angeles Department of Water approved a program called Efficiency LA: Cash for Conservation on Tuesday that will credit businesses and homeowners for saving energy while reducing the risk of blackouts throughout the state. The bottom line: Residential ratepayers who use 10 percent less juice between June 1 and Sept. 30 stand to save about $16 - at $4 per 50 kilowatt-hours saved. Businesses who use more power stand to save even more at $8 per 100 kwh saved during peak times during the week. The cash credits, for billing purposes, only apply to DWP customers at the same address since last summer. Los Angeles would profit from the sale of power at an expected rate of 4 cents per kwh. If Los Angeles cuts its usage 10 percent - or 500 million kwh - the city nets $20 million. Riordan said the DWP is selling its power at 15 percent above production costs.
