AN ornate woodcarving has been unveiled for the first time.

Members of the West Riding Woodcarvers' Association have put their new carving on display.

And a dinner was held at Meltham Golf Club for all the 74 people involved in the project.

And it was there that the wood carving wood carving, as an art form, includes any kind of sculpture in wood, from the decorative bas-relief on small objects to life-size figures in the round, furniture, and architectural decorations.

The woods used vary greatly in hardness and grain.

The pounds 50,000 carving, depicting 41 scenes of life in Calderdale, is similar to one at Kirkwood Hospice Kirkwood Hospice is a hospice situated in the English town of Huddersfield, providing care for the terminally ill. It is situated in the suburb of Dalton and is dependent on private donations and charitable gifts. , Dalton.

The latest work will be given to the Elland hospice next week.

 said: "We wanted to recognise the outstanding work that Overgate Hospice does and also make people aware that woodcarving is flourishing in West Yorkshire West Yorkshire, former metropolitan county, N central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county largely embraced the Leeds conurbation and comprised five metropolitan districts: Calderdale, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, and Kirklees. ."

The carving includes depictions of the M62, rush-bearing at Sowerby Bridge and the Brighouse Industrial Society.

Also carved for posterity are Halifax's Victoria Theatre, the town's railway station, Wainhouse Tower and Shibden Hall.

It also looks at local traditions and pastimes, including rugby league and boating on the canals.

The panel measures 9ft by 3ft 6in.

It will be on show at Halifax Town Hall from next Wednesday until March 24.

After that it will hang at the hospice's entrance.

The carving is the fourth similar one that the association has made.

Members have also carved pieces for Kirkwood Hospice, Wakefield Hospice and Kirklees's French twin town, Besanion.
