Repairs have gone slowly for Carufel, but that hasn't hurt his enthusiasm to start the season. ``We're going to go out Saturday, practice and see what happens,'' said Carufel, who finished 14 points behind class champion Dean Kuhn of Oceanside. Finding sponsors for his Grand Am entry has been Carufel's biggest hurdle in the offseason. He said he has enough money to run only the first race of the season. After that, his season is up in the air unless he can find another sponsor. ``Money is the key issue,'' said Carufel, driver of the No. 25 Chevy. ``We have enough money for the first race. After that, we are going to race for as long as we can race. But I'm not worried. My plan is to go out there and win.'' While Carufel and his team members have been busy rebuilding the car, they also have had to make some other adjustments to their entry. Irwindale Speedway has made some rule changes in the Grand Am cars. One of them is a change in shocks for the Grand Am entries. Another is increased weight on the cars and new weight distributions. The new shock package eliminates the use of non-nitrogen shocks. Carufel said his team is switching to a type of liquid-oil shock. In addition, 100 pounds are being added to the Grand Am cars, from 2,600 pounds to 2,700. Plus increased weight is being added to the left sides of the cars. Carufel has yet to test his car with the modifications implemented by Irwindale Speedway. He will have to test, make changes and race all on the same day, which could put him at a disadvantage for the season opener. ``We gotta learn quick in practice,'' Carufel said. Valencia's Aaron Staudinger started the ARTS season off right by winning the season opener in Vegas. New sponsors and new equipment have Staudinger's Vision Motorsports team thinking championship. Staudinger and his No. 72 Pick-Your-Part Chevy Silverado crew have invested in new motors, new bodies and a new chassis. ``I think we're better prepared than we've ever been before,'' said Staudinger, who was second in points in the ARTS Southwest division last year. ``We have an incredible jump right now, and we have a great chance of taking the championship home.'' Irwindale Speedway has become one of Staudinger's favorite tracks to race, but it is also one of the more challenging. For one, the half-mile oval is one of the biggest tracks on which the American Race Trucks compete. Secondly, Irwindale is a three-groove track in which passing is common and more often than not, frequent. ``Vegas, Cajon, the Orange Show are all one-groove tracks,'' Staudinger said. ``If you get stuck up on the outside, you're done. Momentum at (Irwindale) is everything.'' In addition to the Grand Ams and American Race Trucks, the NASCAR Super Late Models and Super Stocks will be racing tonight at Irwindale Speedway.
