CARTIER CREATES 'KREMLIN CUP' FOR MOSCOW TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

CARTIER CREATES 'KREMLIN CUP' FOR MOSCOW TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
NEW YORK, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Cartier, the international

jeweler, is participating in what has become Russia's most important sports event, the third annual Kremlin Cup tennis tournament. Professional tennis stars from around the world are competing in Moscow's Olympic Stadium from Nov. 9 to Nov. 15, in pursuit of what will now be called the Cartier Kremlin Cup.
Honorary chairman of the 1992 event is the president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, himself an avid tennis player.
The Cartier trophy, made in sterling silver and standing over 25 inches high, symbolizes the international flavor of both the tournament and the Cartier group. Its design combines elements of French fluting and English footing with soaring American structural columns and a body reminiscent of a Russian samovar.
Bearing the legend "Cartier Kremlin Cup," the towering trophy already carries the name of two-time tournament winner Andrei Cherkasov, who defeated Jakob Hlasek in the 1991 final and Tim Mayotte in the event's first year in 1990. Names of all future winners will be added to the cup in the coming years.
The Russian Television Company is broadcasting the matches to 100 million homes for all seven days of the tournament, with the semi-finals and the finals getting three hours of live coverage each day. Additional coverage is expected around the world via the facilities of ESPN and CNN.
Last year's competition drew sellout crowds of 18,000 spectators to Olympic Stadium for each of the tournament's final days.
The Cartier Kremlin Cup tournament is sanctioned by the IBM/ATP Tour in cooperation with the Russian Sports Federation. The event is Cartier's second major undertaking in the former Soviet Union, following the enormously successful retrospective of early Cartier jewels recently held in St. Petersburg at the Hermitage Museum.
Cartier International, one of the world's leading luxury goods companies, designs, manufactures and distributes all of Cartier's products. The company markets a broad range of luxury products including jewelry, watches, pens, leather goods, scarves, fragrances, lighters, china, silver and crystal through a global network of 153 Cartier stores and 10,000 authorized dealers located in 123 countries. In the United States there are 23 Cartier stores. Founded in 1847, the House of Cartier has long been identified with quality, prestige and history and has served as crown jeweler to 19 royal houses. Over the last decade, the firm has enjoyed consistent and steady growth, achieving over $1.3 billion in sales in 1992.
