LEE CARSLEY will put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension within 48 hours of the Premiership season ending.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder has enjoyed an outstanding season, playing in every game, and his consistency has been rewarded. Though there had been some talk that a couple of clubs in the Midlands were prepared to offer Cars-ley a deal, his only interest was staying at Goodison Park for 12 more months.

With only the formality of dotting the i's and crossing the t's, Everton expect to have all business with Carsley wrapped up early next week.

"We have offered Lee a deal and I think he will stay," said manager David Moyes, who will be without Andrew Johnson tomorrow after he underwent surgery on his ankle.

"Alan Stubbs will also be offered a contract. Andy brought his operation forward. Hopefully it will just speed up the recovery process.

"That's why we wanted the operation done as quickly as possible. He should be OK for the start of pre-season.

"I've no idea how long he will be on crutches for but at least we know that bone growth has now been removed."

Moyes has started drawing up plans about which players will be arriving at Goodison over the summer but one man not on his list of targets is Michael Owen.

The Newcastle United striker has a pounds 9m release clause in his contract, but his exorbitant wages, plus the fact he is similar in style to Johnson, means Moyes will look elsewhere.

"Michael Owen is a terrific player," said Moyes, who made an unsuccessful bid for Owen in the summer of 2005 when he was at Real Madrid.

"But I just think we have got a forward of his style in Andy, so he is probably not what we require."

For the time being, top of Moyes' priority list is the final fixture of the season against Chelsea and he is urging his side to go out with a bang.

Everton's recent record at Stamford Bridge is less than impressive but the mood in the camp is good.

"Our form has been quite good but I would like us to finish by beating Chelsea and make sure we finish fifth," said Moyes. "The worst we could finish is seventh but there is a lot at stake.

"The big thing for me, though, this year has been the improvement in the group. That has been really pleasing.

"We are going down there to make a game of it. We haven't altered anything from how we would normally prepare. We are determined to finish as well as we can."
