CARRS, VISA TEAM UP TO OFFER CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Carr Gottstein Foods Co. (NYSE: CGF), the largest food and drug retailer in Alaska, is the first supermarket chain in Anchorage to accept VISA card payments for purchases. Effective Nov. 3, VISA cards can be used at all Carr's stores across Alaska.
"We're extremely pleased to now offer VISA as a payment option," said Mark R. Williams, president and chief operating officer of Carr Gottstein. "This addition to our customer service efforts will make it easier and more convenient for people to buy groceries and other merchandise."
Williams noted that the use of VISA payments for groceries, although new to Anchorage, is popular in the rest of the United States. In a national study, 50 percent of VISA cardholders interviewed in eight different supermarket chains said that they like having the option of using their VISA cards to make purchases in supermarkets.
Carr Gottstein operates 32 stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kenai and other Alaska communities and is the largest employer and food retailer in the state. Annual sales were $557 million in 1992. VISA is the largest consumer payment card system in the world, with more than 10.5 million acceptance locations and 316 million cards issued world wide, including 157 million in the United States. VISA also has the leading global ATM network.
