CARRERAS TO SING TONIGHT IN T.O.

World famous opera tenor Jose Carreras is appearing in concert tonight at the Fred Kavli Fred Kavli, b. 1927, is a naturalized American physicist, business leader, innovator, and philanthropist. Born in the village of Eresfjord, Nesset municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway.  Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is a performing arts and administrative center located in Thousand Oaks, California. It was built in 1994 on the former site of "Jungleland" at a cost of $63.8 million. .

During his exclusive Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  appearance, Carreras will be accompanied by pianist Lorenzo Bavaj and sing works by Puccini, Scarlatti, Bellini and others.

Carreras has had a long and impressive career as an opera star, concert soloist and recording artist. He gained worldwide popularity when he teamed up with Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti for The Three Tenors.

Born in a working-class suburb of Barcelona, Spain, Carreras' musical career was influenced by the movies. When he was 6 years old his family took him to see ``The Great Caruso,'' starring Mario Lanza. His favorite song from the movie was ``La Donna e Mobile'' from Verdi's ``Rigoletto'' He would sing the piece for his classmates Classmates can refer to either:

 and for the patrons of his mother's beauty shop. His family struggled to pay for singing lessons and took him to the opera when they could afford it.

In 1971, Carreras made his international debut in a concert performance of Donizetti's ``Maria Stuart'' at the Royal Festival Hall The Royal Festival Hall is a concert, dance and talks venue within Southbank Centre in London, England. It is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames, not far from Hungerford Bridge.  in London. Then, like a Hollywood movie, Carreras stepped in, with only two days notice, and took over the tenor role in Donizetti's ``Caterina Cornaro'' when the scheduled singer fell ill during the opera's British premiere.

Carreras' career skyrocketed with roles like Pinkerton in ``Madame Butterfly'' at the New York City Opera The New York City Opera (NYCO) is based in Philip Johnson's New York State Theater at Lincoln Center.

The company was founded in 1944 with the aim of an opera company that would be financially accessible to a wide audience, innovative in its choice of repertory, and a home
 and Cavaradossi in ``Tosca,'' which was his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1974.

In 1987, Carreras faced a challenge even greater than his music when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia acute lymphoblastic leukemia

. He underwent a year of drastic medical treatment including a bone-marrow transplant and since has made a stunning comeback to the opera stage.

``Before my illness, my career was so important,'' said Carreras. ``Afterward, I just felt lucky to have the opportunity to express myself and communicate with my audience.''
