CARR PARKED, CSUN STALLS STAR PUNISHED VS. SD STATE SDSU 80, CSUN 70.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  - Markus Carr broke the Cal State Northridge huddle and turned toward the bench.

He looked for an open seat but couldn't find one. He kept walking and was nearly at the end of the bench when a teammate moved down so Carr could sit closer to the coaches.

It was a rare sight indeed.

Carr, the only returning starter from last years NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

team, didn't start Saturday against San Diego State because he was late to a team meal Saturday. It was the first time he hadn't started since the 1998-99 season.

Four minutes into the game, Carr was back in the mix. He did what he does best - dish, drain shots and keep CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  close. But not close enough.

Carr had a team-high 22 points, but San Diego State used a balanced scoring attack to hold off a pesky CSUN team 80-70 In front of a crowd of 5,435 at Cox Arena Coordinates:  .

The Aztecs (4-2) had three players in double digits Double Digits was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right. The Aztecs hit 33 of 44 free throws, compared to 12 of 27 for CSUN.

The new-look Matadors (1-3) already had a different look after losing nearly the entire lineup from the season before. But with junior college transfer Ed Estavan running the point, CSUN appeared to be an entirely new team.

Three freshmen started. And the three players who played roles in helping the Matadors to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament were sitting on the bench for the start of the game.

CSUN forward Joey Busch, who started nine games last season, didn't play at all.

Estavan, who played at L.A. City College last season, made his first career start for the Matadors. Even when Carr was in the game, Estavan was running the show at times.

Braswell said he had Carr at shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. San Diego State went on an 8-0 run midway through the second half to build a 14-point lead at 59-45 with 11:27 left in the second half. During the run, Bland, the Mountain West Conferences leading scorer, dunked an alley-oop pass from Myron Epps.

But CSUN rallied.

San Diego State led by as many as 14 points until CSUN pulled within five at 63-58 on a Carr dunk off a pretty pass from freshman postman Chris Davis Chris Davis is the name of a couple of people:

. Moments earlier, Estavan knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing to pull CSUN within six points.

The Aztecs then used free throws and defense to hang onto their lead. They went without a basket for 8:49 and hit only 12 of their next 18 free throws.

The Aztecs started the game on a 17-10 run but the Matadors came back to take the lead. Carr hit a 3-pointer from the right wing and after a missed shot by Mike Mackell, Carr converted a three-point play to pull CSUN within 17-16.

San Diego State then turned the ball over - its 11th of the first half - and Carr found Estavan on a fast break, who sank a 3-pointer for a CSUN 19-17 lead. Its first lead came with 8:45 left in the first half.

CSUN also led at 22-19 on a Carr 3-pointer but it would be its last lead of the game.

San Diego State has its best six-game stretch since the 1984-85 team finished 5-1 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

, who coached Michigan to the national title in 1989, led the Aztecs to a 14-14 season last year. San Diego State seems primed for a run at the Mountain West title this season. But San Diego State didn't put the Matadors away until there were five minutes left.
