beginning this season, they've since rebounded in their inaugural campaign in the Big West Conference.

Not that most fans at the Bren Center noticed.

The Matadors were greeted with countless chants of ``Cal State Nowhere'' and ``UC Rejects'' after falling to an early 20-point deficit against UC Irvine.

Markus Carr paid no attention.

The senior guard had a career-high 31 points to lead CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  to a 73-72 overtime victory over UC Irvine, which was previously undefeated in conference, on Saturday in front of a crowd of 3,350.

``That was so good,'' CSUN coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  said. ``That was unbelievable. For the first time this year, I felt Markus wasn't going to let this team lose.''

CSUN (6-10, 5-2) now is alone in second place in the Big West, one game behind Irvine (13-5, 6-1).

Junior Lionel Benjamin made a hook shot in the lane with 25 seconds left to give CSUN the 73-72 lead. On the other end, Stanislav Zuzak's last second shot clanked off the left side of the rim as CSUN snapped Irvine's home-winning streak at 19 games.

``I don't think this was an upset,'' Carr said. ``We came in and played our game plan. We showed a lot of maturity. I was just going with the flow. I think the team was looking for Looking for

The Matadors made a furious rally to tie it and even had a chance to win in regulation but Carr, who had 22 points in the second half, missed from 5 feet out with one second left.

missed the first of two free throws with 29 seconds left in regulation.

Green, the Big West player of the year last season and this year's scoring leader, finished with 16 points and took just seven shots. CSUN had four players in double figures, including Curtis Slaughter slaughter

with 11 and Benjamin and Ian Boylan with 10 each.

Benjamin was fouled on the game-winning shot but missed the free throw. It didn't matter.

``I was driving to the basket, the ball was tipped and I saw the big guy (7-foot center Adam Parada) coming,'' Benjamin said. ``I just tried to get it over him.''

Green, who was double-teamed on Irvine's final possession, dumped the ball to Parada on the baseline. Parada threw the ball back up to Zuzak near the top of the arc but his shot didn't fall.

The Matadors went on a 19-10 run in the second half, tying it 57-57 on a 3-pointer by Carr from the top of the arc with 5:38 left. CSUN even took the lead.

Irvine, a second-half team, used a 38-19 run at the end of the game to beat the Tigers. To beat Long Beach State, Irvine rallied with a 10-1 run at the end. But Irvine's run came at the start this time.

The Anteaters made a 23-6 run and took a 17-point lead to open the game. They extended to a 29-9 cushion on a 3-pointer by Green with 8:43 left in the first half.
