The Jazz ``A'' Band members didn't resemble a typical group of high school students as they eked the most out of a hot afternoon rehearsal. And when they finally started to groove, they didn't sound like one either.

But first they must raise $15,000 to $20,000 for the trip - a task complicated by the music department's expected $3,000 shortfall.

Starting today, the department will kick off a Calabasas Mega Music Carnival to raise money for its programs, which cost about $30,000 annually and include personnel, instrument and music expenses. The three-day event three-day event

will feature rides, booths food and local bands.

For the Jazz ``A'' Band's New York trip, music director Josh Barroll said, the department is trying to raise that money through corporate donations as well as securing funds from the City Council.

Barroll, who teaches all the classes with the help of a part-time assistant, said that after he got the news from Lincoln Center, he ran out in a daze to tell the students.

``I told them, I've never been as proud of any students as I am now - You will remember this accomplishment for the rest of your lives.''

The band's accomplishment reflects the caliber of the music department as a whole, said Barroll, whose students have gone on to study music at New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the  and the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. .

The skill and discipline that the students develop to achieve their goals as musicians also spills over into their overall commitment to excel, he said.

``I think the most important thing is it gives these kids a home,'' he said. `'I see the joy, the happiness, the dedication, the love. And they turn that to school.''

All six students who were accepted to Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  in the past two years were part of the music department, he said.

Evan Ingber, 16, who has been a drummer and percussionist in the band for three years, said he knows what makes the program special.

``It's all about the soul,'' said Ingber, a junior whose passion has been music since the third grade. ``We're constantly being bombarded about soul. Without it there'd be no music. There'd be no jazz.''

``We groove really hard,'' said senior Justin Heiber, 17. ``We're committed musicians.''

``The best part is the friendships and the bonds that we form,'' he said.

But Heiber worries that a budget shortfall facing the music program will rob future students of the experiences he and his band mates enjoy.

Barroll said although the $3,000 figure might not seem like a large amount, for a music department that has already stretched its resources, the gap could mean one jazz band, not two, and less money to buy music, as well as the absence of the only assistant.

The program offers five academic music classes, including a chorus that will leave for New York on Monday. They were among 18 groups of musicians chosen to attend nationwide.

The thought that the music department could suffer because of a lack of funding ``saddens me,'' Heiber said.

``I think everyone should have the chance to be in the same-caliber group we are. It's sad because of the precedent we set.''
