He is pushing a plan to revive the city's three-day carnival, which drew some 10,000 people when it was last held in 1991. However, downtown merchants complained they lost business because the carnival was held on the old Casey Road high school ball field instead of along High Street as they wished. ``I think it'd be great for teens and children in town that go into neighboring neigh·bor n. 1. One who lives near or next to another. 2. A person, place, or thing adjacent to or located near another. 3. A fellow human. 4. Used as a form of familiar address. v. cities and attend carnivals there,'' Harper said. ``There's not much for youth in Moorpark, and we need to offer them more activities.'' The move comes as the city's Community Services Department prepares its annual roster of city-sponsored events for council approval. The carnival, which was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, consisted of rides, food and merchandise booths but was replaced with the Country Days, a one-day event one-day event a contraction of the three-day event but like that contest is aimed at selecting the best all-round horse and rider. The events usually contested are show-jumping, dressage and cross-country. in October that consists primarily of a parade and booths along High Street. The Moorpark Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to discuss the carnival later this month, including the cost of crowd and traffic control. ``It'd probably be great to go along with Country Days but I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." At Harper's request, the City Council has ordered a report on options for a return of the carnival, including costs, sponsorships and possible incorporation into other events held in the city. Harper said he would like to see the carnival reinstated, along with such events as summer concerts in the park, Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894. in the Park and a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony, which were canceled because of budget problems. ``The budget is looking very good right now and we have a very good reserve,'' said Harper. ``And these events help the community be a community.'' |
