CARNIVAL REPORTS RECORD SECOND QUARTER NET INCOME

MIAMI, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Cruise Lines, Inc. (NYSE: CCL), to be renamed the Carnival Corporation, reported net income of $65.1 million ($0.46 EPS) on revenues of $378.2 million for the second quarter ended May 31, 1993, compared to net income of $57.1 million ($0.41 EPS) on revenues of $346.0 million for the same quarter in 1992.
Revenues and income for the second quarter were at record levels increasing 9 percent and 14 percent, respectively, over the comparable quarter in 1992.
Micky Arison, chairman and CEO of Carnival Corporation, said the company is very pleased with the results. "Second quarter financial results show a strengthening of yields for our major cruise companies, along with stronger occupancy levels," Arison said. He pointed out that the results particularly benefited by a full quarter of operation of Holland America Line's new MS Statendam.
Arison also said that Carnival Cruise Lines' Super Savers program, introduced last November as an advance purchase discount, "shows continuing strength in the market and at this point it is clear that the program is working effectively." He said that if the current pace of booking activity is sustained, "the second half of the year should show continuing strength."
Net income for the six months ended May 31, 1993, was $115.8 million ($0.82 EPS) on revenues of $701.9 million, compared to net income of $103.8 million ($0.74 EPS) on revenues of $674.8 million for the same period in 1992.
For the three months ended May 31, 1993, the company achieved an average occupancy level of 104.2 percent carrying 298,532 passengers compared to 287,212 passengers for an average occupancy level of 103.6 percent for the second quarter of 1992. Combined with first quarter results, it achieved a fleetwide occupancy level of 102.6 percent for the first six months of 1993 versus 102.8 percent for the same period in 1992. Passenger counts for the six months declined slightly to 563,683 down from 567,122 passengers for the first half of 1992.
The Carnival Corporation comprises the world's largest cruise line based on number of passengers carried. In addition to Carnival Cruise Lines, its other units include Holland America Line, Windstar Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line, which combined operate 19 ships in the Caribbean, Alaska and other worldwide destinations. Carnival Cruise Lines has contracted for the construction of three 70,000 gross-registered-ton, 2,600-passenger ships, the Sensation, Fascination and Imagination, which are scheduled for delivery in 1993, 1994 and 1995, respectively, as well as a 95,000-ton ship which will be the largest cruise ship ever built, scheduled for delivery in 1996. Holland America Line introduced its new Statendam in January, and the company has contracted to construct two more ships, the Maasdam and Ryndam to be delivered in late 1993 and 1994, respectively.
