Carl's Jr. will spread its sloppy burgers in the East and get a new breakfast menu in its parent company's $327 million purchase of Hardee's.

Restaurants will have the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. names under the deal announced Monday.

Hardee's - the fourth-biggest burger chain behind McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's - will become a subsidiary of Carl's Jr. parent, CKE CKE Clock Enable (memory signal)

Restaurants. Hardee's owner, Montreal-based Imasco Ltd., reported last week that the chain lost $7.9 million in the first quarter, a 20 percent increase from a year earlier.

Hardee's slack sales could be reversed by a plan already in the works to convert from frying food to grilling, said H. McManus grew up following Partick Thistle and cites his early hero as Chic Charnley, an enigmatic Thistle player of the time who longed to play for , who stays as Hardee's Food Systems president. He said many customers were turned off years ago when Hardee's changed to frying.

``Those of you who know us thought more of us when we were char-grilling burgers,'' McManus said at a news conference. ``That's the roots of Hardee's and part of the success that Carl's has had.''

Hardee's sales last year totaled $2.98 billion. Carl's menu features large burgers that are advertised with a slogan, ``If it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face.'' One ad features construction workers eating on a scaffolding, where the burger drippings narrowly miss pedestrians but hit a pigeon.

The merger creates a chain of 3,828 restaurants - 3,152 Hardee's outlets in 40 states and 10 foreign countries and 676 Carl's Jr. outlets, primarily in California.
