CARL'S JR. OPENS IN BEIJING, CHINA
ANAHEIM, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Carl Karcher Enterprises,

Inc. (NASDAQ: CARL), parent company for the Carl's Jr. quick-service restaurant chain, today announced the opening of its first restaurant in the People's Republic of China (PRC). While competitors will soon follow, Carl's Jr. is the first American hamburger concept to open in the capital city of Beijing.
The first Carl's Jr. opened amidst much fanfare in Beijing on March 18. The restaurant is housed in a 16,000-square-foot "International Fast Food Court" in Beijing's primary shopping area, called Wangfujing, which features a large number of popular department stores. The Carl's Jr. is located within the food court, which features several restaurants and a common dining room area containing 565 seats, as well as a play area for children.
The restaurant is operated under a licensing agreement with Hop Hing Holdings Ltd. of Hong Kong. Hop Hing Holdings has established a joint venture in Beijing with three local PRC partners. The agreement provides the licensee with exclusive development rights for several restaurants within the next five years. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Hop Hing Holdings is the market leader is Hong Kong's cooking oils industry with more than a 50 percent share of the market. It has distributed its products in China since 1982, and has adopted aggressive plans to diversify its businesses in other food-related areas.
According to Daniel Lam, chief executive officer of Hop Hing Holdings, the high quality standards of Carl's Jr. and its premium position in the quick-service industry led to the decision to work with CKE.
Steve Kishi, vice president of international and franchise development, said, "This new China venture is an exciting and challenging opportunity for Carl's Jr. Disposable income is on the rise in Beijing, and the Chinese people are eager to try Western dining experiences."
The opening of Carl's Jr. is expected to capitalize on the growing popularity of Western-style food, and beef in particular, among the capital city's more than 8.7 million residents. Accordingly, the menu for the Beijing Carl's Jr. is specially adapted for the Chinese appetite.
With this latest opening, there are now international Carl's Jr. Restaurants in Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and China. In addition, the first restaurant in the Middle East is planned for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, this summer.
Carl's Jr., a regional chain of quick-service restaurants, is distinguished by its varied menu of charbroiled hamburgers and chicken sandwiches and other healthful, premium-quality products. Founded in 1941, the company, its franchisees and licensees operate more than 600 restaurants in California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, China, Japan, Malaysia and Mexico.
