 attempts last week, when assailants attacked their victims with a baseball bat. Palmdale gang detail deputies identified Kristopher White, 18, of Palmdale as the prime suspect in a two-day crime spree involving three attempted carjackings and a robbery of a Food 4 Less store.

``He's the main player,'' said Deputy John Keiss. ``He's the one that attacked the people with the bats.''

Officials said five young men or teen-agers are suspected in the attacks. Three remain in custody after their arrests early Thursday when a deputy spotted them driving a car with no license plates.

Fernando Fiero, 19, Alfredo Cervantes, 23, and a 17-year-old boy, all of Lancaster, were arrested on suspicion of attempted carjacking, robbery, vandalism The intentional and malicious destruction of or damage to the property of another.

They are self-proclaimed gang members who are trying to make a name for their group, Keiss said.

``They want to be the up-and-coming thing,'' he said. ``They started as a tagging party crew.''

White, who has a $750,000 warrant out for his arrest, was last known to be at his mother's home in the 38600 block of Pond Avenue. He had been charged earlier with battery on school grounds.

Officials said White and four others are suspects in the carjacking attacks that took place shortly after 11 p.m. Oct. 12 in front of a house near Domenic Massari Park, at a shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  at 47th Street East and Avenue S, and in the Palmdale Wal-Mart parking lot.

All the motorists refused to hand over their keys and two were hit with baseball bats. A third escaped injury when he ran.

On Oct. 13, at least four young men entered the Food 4 Less store on Avenue S and 25th Street East and fled with beer and food after attacking a store manager who had held the youngest of the group.

Described as 12 or 13 years old, the youngest has not been identified and remains at large, deputies said.
