CARIGALI-TRITON MAKES THIRD GAS DISCOVERY ON BLOCK A-18 IN GULF OF THAILAND.

. Drilled to a total depth of 11,808 feet in 182 feet of water, the Cakerawala East-1 well was the deepest drilled to date in the JDA. It was drilled nearly 4,000 feet deeper than the Cakerawala Field discovery well, the Cakerawala-1A. Drilled on a separate fault block from the Cakerawala-1A, the Cakerawala East-1 also confirmed the presence of deep reservoir sands (overpressure overpressure,

zones) never encountered in the JDA.

Normal-pressure zone

In the normal-pressure zone, Cakerawala East-1 was tested at a combined daily flow rate of 22 million cubic feet (MMcf) of gas and 131 barrels of condensate condensate, matter in the form of a gas of atoms, molecules, or elementary particles that have been so chilled that their motion is virtually halted and as a consequence they lose their separate identities and merge into a single entity.  through a two-inch choke from two upper sands. This rate is comparable to test-flow rates exhibited by these principal productive zones in the first two wells drilled on Block A-18, the Cakerawala-1A and the Suriya-1 well, an exploratory well drilled on a separate structure to the east of the Cakerawala Field.

Secondary objectives in the normal-pressure zone appeared wet and were not tested.

Cakerawala East-1 was flow tested from two selected intervals between 3,877 and 4,167 feet. The condensate was 51.8 degrees API gravity The American Petroleum Institute gravity, or API gravity, is a measure of how heavy or light a petroleum liquid is compared to water. If its API gravity is greater than 10, it is lighter and floats on water; if less than 10, it is heavier and sinks. .

Deeper zones

Cakerawala East-1 is the first well drilled by CTOC on Block A-18 to reach deeper reservoir sands in the overpressure/high-temperature zones. These zones contain multiple, abnormally high-pressured sandstones that suggest the potential for additional gas reservoir gas reservoir

sands below the horizons proven productive in the first two wells drilled on the block.

Testing was attempted on four intervals. The deepest interval exhibited strong gas shows during drilling, but operational difficulties were encountered during testing that prevented an adequate evaluation of this deeper zone. The next two zones appeared to be wet. The test results of the fourth zone were inconclusive due to harsh well-bore conditions. CTOC plans to evaluate these newly discovered zones at a future date.

Exploration and appraisal program

"To expedite development of Block A-18, CTOC plans to drill up to four appraisal wells this year," said Al Turner, Triton Senior Vice President, Operations. "We look forward to ongoing exploration and appraisal of the Cakerawala Field with Petronas Carigali, along with the continued support and cooperation of the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority."

Drilling is scheduled to begin shortly on two appraisal wells that will be drilled simultaneously by semisubmersible sem·i·sub·mers·i·ble

rigs, the "Falcon" and the "Actinia." One well, the Cakerawala-2, will be located approximately 6.5 km (4 miles) north-northwest of Cakerawala-1A, with another appraisal well, the Cakerawala-3, located approximately 3 km (2 miles) west of Cakerawala-1A.

CTOC also plans to drill two additional exploration wells in 1996 on separate geologic structures from the three exploration wells already drilled on Block A-18. The Bulan-1 well will be drilled 13 km (8 miles) northwest of the Cakerawala-1A. The Bumi-1 well will be drilled 4 km (2.5 miles) east of the Suriya-1 well and approximately 14 km (9 miles) east of Cakerawala-1A.

The Cakerawala East-1 well is located 4.25 km (2.5 miles) east-southeast of the Cakerawala-1A well.

Block A-18, which covers 290,590 hectares (726,474 acres), is located about 450 km (280 miles) from Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur (kwä`lə lm`pr), city (1990 est. pop. , Malaysia, and 750 km (465 miles) from Bangkok, Thailand, in the northern Malay Basin.

CTOC, the operator of Block A-18, is jointly owned by Petronas Carigali (JDA) Sdn. Bhd., an exploration and production subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad, the Malaysian national oil company, (50% interest), and a subsidiary of Triton Energy, (50% interest).
