 Mariah Carey topped the list of nominees for the 24th annual American Music Awards, taking five nominations for her ``Daydream'' album.

Awards are given in seven categories. Nearly a dozen other artists earned multiple nominations Wednesday.

With two nominations each, they are: Toni Braxton, Garth Brooks, D'Angelo, Celine Dion, Fugees, Alanis Morissette, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots Stone Temple Pilots (abbreviated STP) was a popular Grammy Award-winning American hard rock band in the 1990s and early 2000s, consisting of Scott Weiland (vocals), brothers Robert (bass guitar, vocals) and Dean DeLeo (guitar), and Eric Kretz (drums, percussion). , George Strait George Harvey Strait, (born May 18, 1952), is an American country music singer. Winners of the American Music Awards are selected by a national sampling of approximately 20,000 listeners. Names on the ballots are compiled from music industry publications, and results are kept secret until envelopes are opened during the ceremony.

Male Artist: Bryan Adams, Eric Clapton and Seal.

Female Artist: Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette.
