CARENETWORK ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

MILWAUKEE, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- E. Thomas Sheahan, chairman of the board of directors of CareNetwork, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRNT) announced at a special meeting today that the board has unanimously chosen Elwood I. Kleaver, Jr. as the new president and chief executive officer.
"Mr. Kleaver is a successful leader of managed care corporations across the country," Sheahan said. "The company has searched nationally for just such an individual.
"We expect Mr. Kleaver and the company's senior management team to return CareNetwork to both profitability and renewed dominance in this market and others in the future. And, we expect this to be built upon a foundation of service to our members and providers."
Kleaver has been involved in corporate turnaround successes in the managed care industry. His industry experience began with Penn Group Health Plan in Pittsburgh (1976-1981), then HealthAmerica (1981-1985), first in Nashville and later in Phoenix, then American Medical Plan in Dallas (1985-1987), then the Coventry Corporation in Dallas (1987-1988), and finally his own consulting firm Saturn Services Corporation located also in the Dallas area (1988-present).
At Saturn, he has devised successful strategic managed care plans for national hospital chains, as well as management services to health care and MIS companies. This same level of success has been Kleaver's hallmark for years. Prior to establishing Saturn, he worked with an investor group who formed Coventry Corporation, a corporation which developed insurance and HMO products with an emphasis on multiple option plans.
At American Medical Plan in Dallas, Kleaver served as executive vice president/chief operating officer. As a start-up managed care firm, it was designed to provide broad based managed health care and management contract services.
At HealthAmerica in Phoenix, he was vice president, regional manager. Among other responsibilities, he was instrumental in developing a new HMO for the region. Before relocating to Phoenix, Kleaver's prior duties centered around corporate acquisitions. HealthAmerica was known in the early 1980s as one of the most aggressive and successful managed care companies in the country.
HealthAmerica's initial introduction into the HMO industry was at Penn Group Health Plan in Pittsburgh, where Kleaver held several senior management positions, including chief financial officer, vice president of operations and vice president of government relations.
Kleaver began his managed care career with the Group Health Association of America, which is the national trade association representing HMOs in legislative and policy matters. Kleaver was chief financial officer and assistant treasurer when he left the association in 1976.
"I've built my reputation in managed care by focusing on the needs of providers and members, and by treating them as I would like to be treated," Kleaver said. "A managed care company must have an outstanding record for health care services and customer satisfaction to be successful in today's changing market. My major goal will be to renew that initiative at CareNetwork."
There will be an interim period through early February, during which Kleaver will be finishing his current endeavors in Washington, D.C. and Texas, while he begins at CareNetwork.
A conference call with Kleaver is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 8, 1993 at 10 a.m. CST, 11 a.m. EST. The call-in number is 1-800-788-1664.
