CARE FOR A JOB? Recession? Health business is anything but ailing..Byline: TRICIA PHILLIPS PROSPECTS on the jobs front are grim at the moment with one healthy exception - healthcare. At any given time around 20,000 jobs are up for grabs. The NHS NHS abbr. Although twothirds of these jobs require medical training, that still leaves opportunities aplenty a·plen·ty adj. Hospital porters are always needed. Among others we found a porter's job in Sherwood Forest, Notts, from pounds 13,233. Meanwhile, security officers, for duties such as patrolling car parks, earn from pounds 12,922 to pounds 15,950. South Tyneside NHS Foundation, for instance, is looking for a security officer (from pounds 13,233). "If you're looking for a career change, then training in healthcare means you'll find work even when times are tough." APPRENTICESHIPS THE NHS is looking for 5,000 apprentices in various areas between now and March 2010. "There is no sign of any dip at the moment," says Sian Thomas from NHS Employers. "Obviously we can't guarantee absolute job security, no one can these days. But as an organization we are resilient. "In fact, in a recession, demands on the NHS increase. We are always looking for good, talented people." They might be based in a lab, a hospital or clinic or visit patients in their own homes, assisting with treatment or providing general care. Healthcare assistants and auxiliary nurses (from pounds 12,922) can be employed without qualifications and then have the chance to get an NVQ NVQ n abbr (BRIT) (= national vocational qualification) → título de formación profesional NVQ n abbr (= National Vocational Qualification) → qualification in care up to Level 3. Even if you're aiming for a full medical career you may not necessarily need a degree or diploma, although this is still the most common way in.
