CARE: WESTIN'S 'TAKE CARE SUMMER' HELPS PUT A CHECK ON POVERTY AND HUNGER

SEATTLE, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Vacationers and business travelers who take advantage of Westin Hotels & Resorts' "TAKE CARE SUMMER" will also be helping to improve the lives of the world's neediest people, CARE said today. From June 1 through Labor Day, Westin will donate a percentage of the revenues from guest visits in the United States and Canada to CARE, the world's largest private relief and development organization.
As a "thank you" to guests, Westin will offer special summer room rates and will give "CARE Packages" of coupons offering over $500 worth of travel discounts with Northwest Airlines, Starbucks Coffee Co., Westin Hotels & Resorts, a car rental company and local discounts from merchants in participating Westin cities. The CARE Package, perhaps the most famous symbol of American generosity worldwide, was developed by CARE to help the needy, beginning with World War II victims in Europe in 1946.
"It's not often people can pamper themselves and help others at the same time," said Michele Alexander, director of CARE's Corporate Council. "A night at one of Westin's luxurious hotels would appeal to anyone, but to be able to contribute in a lasting way and benefit those who are less fortunate makes a stay at Westin even more meaningful.
"Westin's unique spirit of corporate generosity is evident in its partnership with CARE. With its contribution, Westin demonstrates a commitment to better the lives of others," Alexander said.
"Westin has designated CARE's Wawawasi ("children's houses") Project in rural Peru as the cause it will support throughout this three-month program," said Jim Treadway, president of Westin Hotels & Resorts, North America. "The project aims at improving the nutritional status of children under six years of age by providing supplementary food, establishing Food Reserve Funds and training parents in nutrition, agriculture and community organization. Some 17,500 children will directly benefit from the project."
CARE works to combat hunger and poverty through self-help projects in health care, small business support, agricultural development, environmental awareness and reforestation in more than 50 countries of the developing world. CARE also provides emergency food and supplies during crises, most recently in Somalia and the former Yugoslavia.
Westin Hotels & Resorts consists of 44 hotels in the United States and Canada. From The Plaza hotel in New York City to the historic Westin St. Francis in San Francisco, each hotel has a distinct flair and the Westin standard of excellence.
