CARDIS ANNOUNCES HEADQUARTERS MOVE TO SAN DIEGO; PLANS TO EXPAND CARQUEST OUTLETS IN AREA

BUENA PARK, Calif., Feb 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Cardis Corp. (OTC), one of California's largest distributors and retailers of automotive parts, supplies and accessories, announced today plans to move within the next few months its corporate headquarters to San Diego, the company's biggest retail market. The company's headquarters have been in Buena Park since 1980.
In advance of the move to San Diego, Cardis will close its Buena Park warehouse distribution operation and begin servicing its Los Angeles-area customers, including four owned and operated CARQUEST retail stores, from its San Ysidro, Calif., warehouse.
The company employs approximately 100 workers at its Buena Park warehouse and another 40 at headquarters, out of a total statewide employment of 450. It is estimated that the San Diego-area consolidation will necessitate the layoff of about 90 workers.
"These decisions are never easy to make, but the San Diego area of the state is our strongest market and we need to be closer to the region where we have plans for expanding both our retail and distribution programs," said Kenneth C. Cleveland, Cardis' president and chief executive officer.
The company owns and operates 17 CARQUEST outlets throughout San Diego and Imperial counties as well as a major warehousing operation that services its stores and more than 100 other retailers and automotive repair shops from Oceanside, Calif., to cities in Baja California, Mexico.
"We have the systems in place to provide the same high level of service to all of our Southern California customers from one distribution site," Cleveland said. "This move strengthens our position economically and from a market perspective. We are the largest independent auto parts dealer in the San Diego area, and we hope to be able to build on that position in the future."
Cardis has been working to reduce expenses and its debt position in order to restore its operating profitability. Through Oct. 31, 1992 -- the first half of its fiscal year -- the company reported net losses of $1.3 million, or $.61 per share, on net sales of $34.0 million.
The company said it is also working to consolidate three Northern California warehouses into one operation in Fresno, Calif. Warehouses in Sacramento and Hayward, Calif., are in the process of transferring their distribution requirements. In total, Cardis serves in excess of 100 independent CARQUEST auto parts retailers and auto repair shops in Northern California.
Approximately two-thirds of the company's total fiscal 1992 net sales of $73.3 million were attributable to its Southern California operations with the balance coming from Northern California.
