 NEW YORK, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Sanofi Winthrop Pharmaceuticals (U.S.A.), the pharmaceuticals marketing alliance of Sterling Winthrop Inc. and Elf Sanofi, announced today that Earl K. Shirey, M.D., a prominent Cleveland Clinic Foundation cardiologist, is the recipient of its annual Healthcare Award of Excellence. The award was presented at the annual meeting of the National Management Conference of The American College of Cardiovascular Administrators (ACCA) in Anaheim, Calif.
 The ACCA is a chapter of the American Academy of Medical Administrators (AAMA), which is a co-sponsor of the award. In addition, Dr. Shirey will receive Honorary Fellowship in the ACCA and AAMA.
 Established in 1992, the Healthcare Award of Excellence honors leadership, achievement, commitment and significant contributions that have advanced cardiovascular healthcare. Dr. Shirey was selected for his "outstanding lifetime achievements in the field of cardiology that have had a profound effect on the quality of patient care in the United States." The Award recipient is selected by the American College of Cardiovascular Administrators, Southfield, MI.
 Criteria for selection, designed to emphasize high quality patient care, include achievements of national significance, linkage to cardiology, and a career of medical achievement. Each year's recipient is presented with the award, and has the opportunity to address the ACCA national conference on a topic of critical importance to cardiovascular healthcare managers. Dr. Shirey selected "Medicine: Attention to the Old with the New" as the topic for his keynote address.
 Dr. Shirey, a practicing cardiologist for nearly 40 years, has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation since his residency training in 1953. He holds an M.D. degree from Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and is board certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Cardiovascular Disease. He is a member of more than 10 professional organizations and has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles.
 The American College of Cardiovascular Administrators is a professional organization of those individuals who are in a management positions related to cardiovascular medicine. ACCA allows for a formal and informal information exchange among members so that they may develop solutions in dealing with the management concerns of cardiovascular medicine.
 Sanofi Winthrop is the U.S. pharmaceuticals marketing unit of Sterling Winthrop Inc., with diagnostic imaging agents and cardiovascular therapies among its primary product categories.
