CAR-POOL LANE SET TO OPEN; MAYOR HAS RESERVATIONS.Byline: Teresa Jimenez Daily News Staff Writer A 6-1/2-mile stretch of a car-pool lane on the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which paid for the $24 million project with federal and state gas tax money, eventually plans to extend the car-pool lane to a total of 36 miles. Still, though she'll celebrate it, Heidt said she has reservations about how effective the new lane will be. ``Most of the people you see on the (San Diego) and Hollywood freeways are driving alone. And there's no one in the car-pool lane,'' Heidt said. ``We'll have to wait and see.'' During the 9 a.m. event, a vintage California Highway Patrol car will be followed down the new roadway by other antique cars, commuter vans and electric cars. Then the cones will be removed and it will be open for all to use. ``They save time. It's estimated they save (car poolers) at least one minute per mile during rush hour,'' Jager said. ``It will really benefit the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valley commuters who travel into Los Angeles. Based on the minute per mile, you can save a little over half an hour on your commute.'' The problem, however, is the car pooling. Cars will need at least two people in the vehicle to use the ``high occupancy vehicle'' lanes, or diamond lanes, Jager said. Though the MTA does not have estimates on the number of drivers who currently car pool, the special lanes will benefit their commutes as well as convince others to find a driving partner, Jager said. ``It can be used as an educational experience for drivers that may be stuck in rush hour and look over at the car-pool lane,'' Jager said. ``They'll see they could be where they want to be a lot faster if they car pool.'' And Jager added that when fewer cars are on the road, everyone benefits. ``It's an alternative for people who drive solo to match up with someone,'' Jager said. ``That way we reduce the smog and the traffic congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load. congestion - When the offered load of a data communication path exceeds the capacity. .
