CAR-PEDESTRIAN VICTIM IDENTIFIED.
LANCASTER - Deputies identified Calvin Kenneth Johnson as the pedestrian killed after being struck by a pickup truck Sunday night on a darkened stretch of West Avenue I.
Deputies say the 21-year-old Lancaster man had been walking along Avenue G near 60th Street West about 7:40 p.m. when he was struck by a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Timothy Ranz, 24, of Rosamond.
``Johnson had been seen in the immediate area before the accident, walking in the roadway, and another motorist had to swerve to avoid hitting him,'' said Sgt. Gus Risinger.
Ranz told deputies he was unable to see Johnson until the impact.
Because he appeared to be driving the speed limit and no other violations were evident, deputies say they will not seek charges against Ranz.
Sheriff's deputies say they are investigating whether Johnson had been walking on the roadway or intentionally stepped in front of the pickup truck that hit him. He had reportedly been upset over breaking up with a girlfriend earlier in the day, officials said.
``We don't know at this point whether he was upset or mentally handicapped or under the influence,'' said Risinger. ``At this point, we can't confirm any of that.''
Johnson had been staying with friends a couple of blocks away from where the incident occurred.
