CAR SEAT TRAVEL TIPS FROM CENTURY PRODUCTS
MACEDONIA, Ohio, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The good news is that

infant and child car seats have already saved thousands of children from potential death or injury resulting from auto accidents. The bad news is that only about 56 percent of the car seats in use are being used properly. Knowing the right way to use your car seat can help reduce the risk of harm to your child and give you peace of mind when traveling. Century Products, the nation's largest car seat manufacturer, offers the following car seat usage tips to help protect your child's future.
First, look for an infant or child car seat that offers a combination of comfort for the child, and convenience for you. The easier the seat is to use, the better the chance you'll use it correctly.
Second, face the car seat backwards for infants weighing under 20 pounds. This is because their better-developed back muscles are more able to absorb on impact. Once your child is larger and stronger (over 20 pounds) face the seat forward to afford a nice view while riding.
Third, it is best to place the car seat in the back seat, as close as possible to the center of the car. Facing the soft upholstery of the back seat helps eliminate the possibility of the child striking a hard dashboard or protruding knobs.
Fourth, check to see that the seat's harness fits snugly. Make sure that the harness latch is in the proper position for the weight of your child, and that the harness is securely fastened over the child's shoulders.
Finally, and most importantly, be sure to thoroughly read and understand the manufacturer's instructions for the proper use of the car seat. Since each car seat model tends to differ slightly, instruction on their use will also differ. After reading the instructions, put them in a safe place. Most car seats are designed with slots on the back of the seat to conveniently store instructions. That way, anyone else who needs to use the seat can review them when necessary.
Remember, while you can't always prevent a car accident, with the proper use of a car seat, you can significantly decrease the danger a collision poses to your child. Using these tips from Century Products, you can ensure that traveling with baby is as enjoyable as possible.
