Southern California's new and used car sales industry contributed nearly $25 billion last year to the region's economy, according to according to

 will report annual sales of new and used cars in the five- county area totaled $24.8 billion in 2001. Of that figure, $22.3 billion was by new-car dealers, according to the report that was timed with the opening of the California International Auto Show at the Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim Convention Center is a major convention center in Anaheim, California. But it does note several areas in which the region leads the country in auto-making:

--Consumer-oriented auto research was started by Agoura Hills-based J.D. Powers & Associates, and this activity has grown, with other local firms popping up, including NextTrend, a Thousand Oaks-based auto analyst.

--There are 16 auto/light truck-oriented magazines based in Southern California, and their combined circulation is 6.7 million. There are also five auto-business publications based here.

The report also shows there were 613 auto-manufacturing establishments in the region in 2000, employing more than 36,000 people.

``We do have a significant impact on the global auto industry,'' said Jack Kyser, senior vice president and chief economist of the LAEDC and one of the report's authors. ``There's a lot of auto money sloshing around the local economy.''

Another major local auto-industry organization is the Specialty Equipment Market Association in Diamond Bar that represents makers of automotive accessories.
