CAR CRASHES INTO COIN-OP LAUNDRY.

An 89-year-old man crashed his car through the front of a coin-operated self-service laundry A self-service laundry is a facility where clothes are washed and dried. They are known in the UK as launderettes or laundrettes - and in the USA as laundromats (from the genericized trademark of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation).  in Van Nuys on Tuesday afternoon, striking one man and narrowly missing another.

The driver and a 65-year-old man, who was struck by the vehicle, were taken to area hospitals after the 2:45 p.m. crash at Vanowen Street and Woodley Avenue, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  fire Capt. Scott Gould said.

The 65-year-old man suffered chest trauma Chest trauma (or thoracic trauma) is a serious injury of the chest. Thoracic trauma is a common cause of significant disability and mortality. Thoracic injuries account for approximately 25% of all trauma-related deaths.  but was expected to fully recover. The driver told paramedics he blacked out before the crash, Gould said. While he didn't appear to have suffered major injuries, he was taken to a hospital for observation.

Lorne Sloan, the laundry's owner, was inside repairing the change machine when the motorist hit a parked car, then skidded through the front windows and came to a stop with the wheels still spinning.

``I heard screaming tires, and the next thing I knew, he was eight inches from my feet,'' Sloan said. ``He was sitting there with two hands on the wheel and this blank look on his face - just like he was driving on the freeway.''
