CAR COMPANY EXECUTIVES AND UAW PRESIDENT ISSUE STATEMENT FOLLOWING MEETING WITH PRESIDENT-ELECT CLINTON

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a joint statement by Robert J. Eaton, chairman, Chrysler Corporation; Harold A. Poling, chairman, Ford Motor Company; Jack F. Smith, president, General Motors Corporation; and Owen Bieber, president, UAW; following a meeting here today with President-elect Bill Clinton:
"We appreciate having had a chance to meet with President-elect Clinton. The meeting was a continuation of the one we had in August.
"Like that meeting, today's session also was a very open and wide- ranging discussion about some of the major issues facing our country which Mr. Clinton addressed during the campaign -- jobs, investment and a vibrant manufacturing sector.
"We discussed the impact that trade policy, government regulation and health care have, not only on the auto industry but also on the entire American economy.
"All of us -- Owen Bieber of the UAW, and the CEO's of Chrysler, Ford and General Motors -- came here hoping for a constructive dialogue. We were not disappointed.
"We hope this meeting will lead to a much closer partnership between government, business and labor, and will help create an atmosphere in which we can all move forward together to solve the problems facing America."
