CAP-TREND From Magnum Technologies Provides Automated, Web-Based Trending and Capacity Reporting.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 1999--A new tool from Magnum Technologies, Inc. will help reduce the high costs associated with network and IT downtime by indicating capacity problems -- before they become an issue, founders say.

The average business experiences two hours of network downtime per week, or 12 days per year, according to according to

a Benchmarks magazine survey. Ten percent of large and 6 percent of smaller businesses in the study put the cost of this downtime between $5,000 and $50,000 per hour, or between $500,000 and $5 million per year.

In a recent survey published in Internet Week, 48 percent of respondents said they don't have the time or tools they need to do comprehensive capacity planning Determining the required future configuration of hardware and software for a network, datacenter or Web site. There are numerous capacity planning tools on the market used to monitor and analyze the performance of the current hardware and software.  projects. The same survey showed that the majority rely on simple performance reporting tools, such as statistics from hubs, routers and other devices, or problem alarm/events.

"CAP-TREND provides automated trending and capacity reports that equip technical staff with the tools they need to automatically identify trends by defined thresholds . . . before they become a problem," said Tim Hadden, executive vice president and Magnum Technologies co-founder together with Greg Crow, president.

CAP-TREND also monitors the health of IT by setting thresholds below problem levels, which allows IT staff to make capacity upgrades before they have problems or capacity issues. "Without this tool, it's like driving a car without a gas gauge," Hadden said.

CAP-TREND is available immediately. It has been deployed at several major companies, including KN Energy Inc., a $9 billion integrated energy services company that operates in 16 states serving more than 230,000 residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers. "CAP-TREND's simple and fast access to historical performance information allows the elimination of finger pointing and assists our customers in optimizing performance of network applications," said Bill Brownrigg, manager of strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.  and technology for KN Energy Inc.

CAP-TREND's web-enabled presentation makes complex information easy to use and understand, improving communications between IT and other business units. And most installations of CAP-TREND can be completed within 10 minutes. CAP-TREND will automatically recognize and integrate new devices as they are added -- an important part of Magnum's zero administration approach.

CAP-TREND provides a number of additional user benefits, including:

-- Exception reporting: CAP-TREND utilizes user-defined thresholds

to proactively address capacity issues and/or performance

bottlenecks. -- Application grouping: CAP-TREND allows IT staff to group devices

based on business usage.
