CANYONS TURNING TO MITCHELL; SOPHOMORE FORWARD IS MVP IN LONG BEACH EVENT.

Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  sophomore Zevette Mitchell emerged from last week's Long Beach tournament without injuries, but coach Greg Herrick was a little concerned about her shoulders.

``I asked her after the (championship) game on Saturday if her shoulders hurt because she's been carrying the whole team on them,'' Herrick said.

With a combined three-game total of 32 points and 38 rebounds, the Alemany High graduate was named the eight-team tourney's Most Valuable Player. Mitchell, a 6-foot forward, led her team in a 74-59 victory over Pima from Arizona, a 117-51 pounding of Long Beach City College, and a 75-61 championship win over Pasadena City College. Sophomore forward/center Laura Tweedy, a product of Canyon High, also was named to the all-tourney team.

Their final win earned the Lady Cougars a 4-0 record and handed Pasadena its first loss of the season. Sophomore guard Narineh Hartoonian added 10 points and nine assists in the game.

``I'm a little disappointed in the other sophomores in the championship game, but overall, it's hard to argue with a 4-0 start,'' Herrick said. ``The freshmen are improving daily, and fortunately we're able to win these games while they're learning.''

Sophomore forward Maxine Unverferth sprained her ankle against Long Beach on Friday and sat out the championship game. Herrick said the injury is not serious, but Unverferth is on crutches and is listed as day to day.

This Saturday the Lady Cougars travel to Fullerton College Fullerton College, in Fullerton, California, is the oldest community college in continuous operation in California, having been established in 1913. Fullerton College’s roots can be traced back to a time when the city of Fullerton was primarily an agricultural community  for a 5 p.m. nonconference contest.

Scoring machine: For the second straight game, sophomore guard Woodley Polynice posted more than 20 points for the Canyons men's basketball team. In an 84-70 Canyons loss against Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  last Saturday, The 6-2 Polynice scored a game-high 24 points, which tied with the Marauders' John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. He played college football for Rice University. .

Freshman forward Shahann Greene, a Palmdale High graduate, added 14 points and six rebounds.

``Woodley had a pretty good shooting night again, and Shahann had his best game of the year,'' coach Lee Smelser said. ``Freshmen are kind of unpredictable, but as hard as (Shahann) works in practice, I think he's going to be fairly consistent.''

Canyons (1-1) faced a 12-point halftime deficit before climbing back to tie the score at 61. By that time, however, fatigue had worn down the Cougars.

a lot of energy, and I think that hurt us down the stretch,'' Smelser said. ``Our effort was excellent. We played hard. We just got a little tired trying to catch up all the time. And A.V. was good. They can pound the boards on the inside and shoot on the outside.''

Next up for the Cougars is a Friday road matchup against Cerritos at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, they face Orange Coast at home at 7 p.m.
