CANYONS TO FACE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF SEASON.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

One question kept swirling aroundin the head of College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  football coach Chuck Lyon: How are we going to beat Allan Hancock?

Here is the first opponent with a winning record Canyons will face this season, and the Bulldogs are undefeated (5-0, 1-0 in the Western State Conference Northern Division) to boot. Plus, they're ranked - third in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. ``I've got to find a way,'' Lyon mused this week.

As the Cougars (4-1, 1-0) brace themselves for a 7 p.m. kickoff tonight at Canyons in their most significant challenge to date, Lyon has these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Music Video

How to stop Hancock defensive tackles George Heather and Jabal Yandall, who anchor a defense that is No. 1 in the state against the run - 213 yards allowed in five games. Heather has 21 solo tackles, eight assists and six sacks. Yandall has eight solo and six assisted tackles. Lyon considers them the top tandem in the state.

Canyons' main running back, Jason Parks, who leads the conference with 10 touchdowns, has been hampered by a sore hip but will play. His backup, George Garcia, will miss his second straight game with an ankle injury. The third running back, Corandle Daniels, played defensive back until last week, when he gained 23 yards in five carries.

on Travis Knowles' knee didn't look good, so he is out at least another two weeks. He also might call it a season and seek a medical redshirt. John Bondarczuk has been hampered by a concussion.

Receiver Tim Feirfeil is out at least two weeks with a stretched lateral collateral ligament The lateral collateral ligament (or LCL) is one of the four major ligaments of the knee. It is on the lateral or outside of the joint. It resists forces pushing the knee laterally (away from the body).  and a torn ankle ligament.

Hancock's offensive line outweighs Canyons' by an average of 70 pounds.

``I'll tell you, this team we're playing is one of the three best teams in Southern California Community College football,'' Lyon said.

And yet it is not a foregone conclusion foregone conclusion

that the Cougars will suffer their first (and worst) home loss this season.

First, Canyons can pass. Kevin Carrasco has thrown for 1,035 yards on 66-of-109 passing with eight TDs and three interceptions. Hancock has given up 1,023 yards in five games.

``They play pass defense by getting to the passer quickly,'' Lyon said. Hancock's sacks decrease when there is a scrambling quarterback. Carrasco scrambles and rolls out.

Although there's no Feirfeil to catch passes, there's Jude Oliva, Jason Kitchens, Mark Hamilton Mark Hamilton may refer to:

Plus, Canyons defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. This position aids the head coach a great deal in many ways by delegating play calling to other coaches and allowing the head  Leon Criner came from Hancock. No doubt he has some ideas about how to stop the Bulldogs. One thing he told Lyon was the need to double-team Heather.

Another thing Criner knows is Hancock likes to run up the middle. Matt Daniels has 335 yards, Tyler Otis has 337 yards and Chris Lester (brother of Pittsburgh Steeler Tim Lester Timothy Lee Lester (born June 15, 1968 in Miami, Florida) is a former professional American football running back in the NFL for eight seasons for the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Dallas Cowboys. ) has 308 yards. Canyons' run defense is its strongest suit, especially up the middle.

And don't let the intangibles go unnoticed: Hancock hasn't played a team with a winning record, either. Its five opponents are 8-14.

Canyons' five opponents are 5-16, but at least the Cougars have been battle-tested, going down to the wire in their four games, including one in overtime. Plus, they played their most complete game last week, against Pierce.

``They're more afraid of losing. That's what Leon told me,'' Lyon said.

Perhaps most importantly Adv. 1. most importantly - above and beyond all other consideration; "above all, you must be independent"
above all, most especially
, the players trust they can find a way. As Lyon said, ``Hey, we're 4-1. Our kids believe we can win. I believe we can win if things happen.''

That includes no interceptions by Carrasco, the receivers holding onto the ball and the running game somehow working. No easy task, but still possible.
