According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  is poised to create a training program for medical lab technicians, whose numbers nationwide fall far short of the demand.

The two-year curriculum would offer hands-on experience in area hospitals, similar to the school's well-respected nursing program.

"It seems every day, isn't there a new test to determine if somebody has cancer, or a new disease?" said Sue Albert, dean of Allied Health, which includes the school's nursing department. "Everybody in the U.S. expects to get a full battery of tests and they get aggravated if it takes a week to get (results.)"

The delay is due to a dramatic shortage of technicians, who help process lab tests, she said. The shortage of lab techs exceeds that of nurses statewide and across the nation.

The program's format was recently approved by the state, where some 7,000 new lab technicians will be needed by 2012, according to according to

The college's degree program would have space for roughly 100 students each year.

Funding hinges on federal aid. U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon earmarked $100,000 for the program in a bill passed last week by the House. The measure must navigate the Senate and receive approval from the president.
