Grossmont opened the second half similar to the way it closed out the first: with a sense of urgency. The Griffins scored on their opening possession of the third quarter when Kevin Smith scored on a 2-yard run to extend the advantage to 24-7.

Canyons (12-1) responded with 12 unanswered points.

Marcel Marquez scored on a 15-yard run with 11:31 remaining and found Terence Scott on a 77-yard pass play with 3 minutes left. The Cougars could not score again.

Mistakes proved costly in the first half for Canyons, which turned the ball over four times, including three fumbles by Marquez. Grossmont capitalized, scoring the first 14 points in a 1:06 span of the first and second quarters.
