CANYONS PULLS AWAY CANYONS 40, GLENDALE 14.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Steve Smith gained 144 yards and scored two touchdowns on 20 carries, and freshman quarterback David Parker David Parker is the name of:

 completed 11 of 14 attempts for 221 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Cougars attack.

Parker, who shares quarterback duties with the more-experienced Travis Winn in a tandem system 1. (Elec.) same as Cascade system. , gave the Cougars a lift after Winn got off to ashaky start.

Winn completed 4 of 10 attempts for 47 yards, but had two interceptions.

The Cougars spotted their opponents a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter, when Glendale defensive back Michael Holmes returned Winn interception 55 yards for a Vaqueros touchdown on the Cougars first possession of the game.

Glendale quarterback Jason Kroells hooked up with Steve Carballo on a 27-yard touchdown pass on the Vaqueros next possession.

But the Cougars (3-0) proceeded to reel-off 40 unanswered points.

They got back into the game on an 11-play 68-yard drive, which culminated with a one-yard up-the-gut run by John Harrison.

Smith gained 53 yards on five carries on that drive, and Tommy Garagliano tacked on the extra point to make it 14-7.

Smith scored on a five-yard run to help the close the Cougars to within 14-14, midway through the second quarter, and then again from 18 yards out on their first possession in the second half to give COC a 21-14 lead they would never relinquish.

Parker completed touchdown passes to Ontae Chaney and Jason d`Autremont- from 24 and 28 yards out - respectively, to secure the win for COC.

The Vaqueros slipped to 1-2.
