CANYONS LOADS PASSING ATTACK; RUNNERS BANGED UP FOR BOWL.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

It looked like a practice: Players were running and trying their hardest during drills. Coaches instructed and blew their whistles.

Yet it wasn't the same: Players laughed. Coaches smiled. Players ran different sprint drills. Some coaches ran them, too.

Must be the week of the bowl game.

For College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , practicing in December causes a strong sense of pride and accomplishment. Rarely, if ever, has a program in its first year played in a bowl game.

Before discontinuing the program 17 years ago, the Cougars last appeared in a bowl in 1975. Today, after a 7-3 record, they play 8-2 Mt. Playing in the bowl is what JC players strive to do, so practicing for it is fun.

``We know this is our last game,'' receiver Tim Feirfeil said. ``We don't have to worry about next week. We get to lay it out on the line.''

That doesn't mean they weren't serious on the practice field. The Cougars face another quality opponent, one they haven't seen before. But they have had similar opponents.

Mt. San Jacinto finished second in the Foothill Conference Southern Division. Defensively, the Eagles are first against the run and last against the pass. Sounds a little bit like Allan Hancock, Ventura and Bakersfield. The Eagles led the conference in rushing. So did Hancock and Bakersfield. Ventura was in the top three.

One reason for that is Mt. San Jacinto allows an average of 97.7 yards on the ground. Another reason is Canyons' running backs are hurt. Jason Parks' separated shoulder This article or section is in need of attention from an expert on the subject.

despite having three weeks off. Neither has George Garcia's ankle. So Corandole Daniels will start, but he's more likely to be catching passes out of the backfield.

Speaking of passes, quarterback Kevin Carrasco needs just 331 yards for 3,000 this season. With the running game sidelined, he could attempt at least 40 passes against a defense that gives up, on average, 242.6 yards in the air.

``A lot of the teams we've faced are passing teams: Chaffey, Grossmont, Southwestern,'' Eagles coach Bob Stangel said. ``We know Canyons will be throwing the football. We will have to execute on defense.''

Executing, in this case, takes discipline. Fortunately, the Eagles have it with several former Marines on the roster. Included are sophomore wide receiver Dennis Smith Dennis Smith may refer to:

, who with 34 catches for 576 yards is the primary target of quarterback Damon Puckett; and running back David Minnich, who was second in the conference with 1,103 yards.

``On Saturday we're all brothers. And we need that kind of brotherhood on the field for the wars on Saturday nights,'' Smith said.

Lyon said Canyons will be content to throw underneath, since Mt. San Jacinto uses a deep-zone pass defense. Watch out for Feirfeil, who is healthy after being hampered in October with knee and ankle injuries.

Lyon thinks Feirfeil's speed can exploit the Eagles. Don't be surprised if the first offensive play goes to him.
