Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

Perhaps the coaches had been hiding their true feelings all along.

It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  coach Brent Carder said it was just another non-conference game. College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  coach Chuck Lyon said much the same.

But the real emotions showed through at Cougars Stadium Saturday night when COC See chip on chip.  held off AVC 19-14.

COC's victory avenged last year's 21-14 loss to the Marauders and evens the series, with each team defeating the other four times.

, who ran for 215 yards in last week's season opener, saw limited playing time due to violating team rules.

Anderson still had 106 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns (one receiving), but this week it was COC freshman running back Steve Smith with the dominant debut.

After missing last week with an injured shoulder, Smith exploded for 134 yards on 21 carries to lead the Cougars offense. Quarterback Travis Winn, in the face of a steady pass rush throughout, was held to 155 yards, completing 14 of 27 passes, one touchdown and one interception.

``It was exciting,'' Smith said. ``This was the greatest game I've played in. It's a whole new level. We have a great team, a great line.''

Marauders quarterbacks Justin Holtfreter and Monte Gutkowski combined for three interceptions. Holtfreter completed 15 of 37 passes for 223 yards.

Defenses controlled the game in the first half. The Marauders could have gone into the intermission facing more than the 6-0 deficit they did.

COC receiver Jason d'Autremont took an AVC punt 38 yards to set the Cougars up at the Marauder MARAUDER. Six plays in, the short COC drive stalled at the 1-yard line. Lyon elected to attempt a 19-yard field goal, but AVC's Mike Kott blocked the Heloyt Cervantes kick.

Earlier in the half, Bobby Antee blocked a Cervantes PAT following Sean Cogswell's 1-yard TD with 9:22 left.

Anderson's's 8-yard run with 1:58 left in the third quarter, along with his 9-yard reception from Holtfreter with 3:46 left in the fourth, pulled the Marauders to within 19-14, but that was as close as they got.
