The Cougars opened the season with losses in three of their first four games and need a victory tonight in a Western State Conference showdown with Bakersfield. Otherwise, they run the risk of missing out on an opportunity to qualify for the postseason for the first time since the program was reinstated in 1998.

``We can't lose any more games if we want to go to a bowl game,'' Canyons sophomore Brian Stuart said. ``Every game from here on out is going to have a playoff-type atmosphere.''

Bakersfield (3-1, 2-0) enters the game tied for first place in the conference with Moorpark (4-0, 2-0) and Hancock (3-1, 2-0). The Cougars (1-3, 1-1) can jump right back into the race with a win. A setback setback

``We need to turn this thing around,'' Cougars sophomore Terence Scott said.

Canyons entered the season ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation by several publications, and Street & Smith's ranked the team as high as No.2 in the country. The accolades came because the Cougars had won five consecutive conference titles and were a mere two years removed from a J.C. Grid-Wire national title.

Nobody expected them to be where they are now.

``Not a chance, Canyons, with a 1-3 record, heading into Week 5. That just shows how unpredictable things can be sometimes,'' said Hank hank

Stuart figures to be one of the keys for Canyons against the Renegades. He enters the game third in the conference in rushing with 329 yards. His effectiveness opens the passing game up for quarterback Andrew Miramontes and his favorite target, Scott.

Scott leads the state in receptions with 32 and has totaled 324 yards and four touchdowns in four games.

Bakersfield counters with a balanced offense, averaging 209 yards passing and 123 rushing.

``We're coming into this game focused,'' Scott said. ``We know what's at stake. We need to go out and get this one under our belt.''
